Ailing-Football Nation!

The recent results of the senior and junior national team of ethiopia shows that we got a long and rocky way ahead of us in building a decent team that can compete in continetal level.Ethiopia lost by a goal to a relatively new team in africa, Namibia, in cup of nation qualifying match.

The younger counterpart of the team lost to burkinafaso by the aggregate score of 3 to 2.In club levels none of our clubs ever got closer to quarter final the last 13 years in any competition.

These are just the most recent examples of our teams failers. The only silverware we managed to get since the 3rd african cup of nation is three cecafa cups. Even by this weak competion standard, ethiopias result is far from being impressive. Kenya, uganda and tanzania dominated it for long time.

Given the economic and political problem in our country, how can we raise the standard of our national team? What makes the nations like Nigeria, Cameroon, Senegal, Tunisia etc do good in the continent's competetion? what is their advantage over us? In general, What is the problem with our football?

Please, please feel free to write me your idea and suggestions. It might help in some way to improve our football.

It is a matter of having a country that supports them, a coach that trains them correctly, and disciplined players. Take Tunisia or Egypt for Example: Both countries are supported by their national government giving them a giant purse after Egypt won the Most recent cup of nations and Tunisia won it in 2004. The players don't play in Europe but are disciplined and are organized. The coaching doesn't have to be from Europe even though it is highly preferred. Most Arab coaches boast the best of Africa (Egypt, Libya, Moroccoo, Algeria). But the thing is the disorganization and lack of support by the EFF. No one has attempted to bring over youth and star players from other countries including Lencho and Youssouff Hersi(Young goal scoring talent in Holland) and other players in Israel,Egypt, and Germany/Sweeden.) Our country's dismantled government shows no support of our national team. The first family mostly fails to even attend or pay attention to it. Little or no reward is offered to the team. And the bad plays made at coaching staff. When going on the road to Namibia Seyoum Abate sets up a organized an attack that would guarantee at least three goals up front and disorganised a Namibia attack that scored 2 goals at DRCongo, but desides to sit 2 team veterans with great experience on the international level due to his own personal vandettas and if he didn't make a bad move like that a penalty would have not been awarded by a very young and inexperience back line. Where are our players? But the coaching is killing our team. Why does a club team like St.George have a Brazillian coach, but the national team is a coach with little success with Coffee? When the EFF made this decision it was obviously a bone-headed one not offering him to coach the national team. The team would have had better success with coach Sewnet Bishaw atleast organising a defense to protect from a penalty that would decide the match. Had the team left Namibia with a draw then they wouldn't have to be forced to win at DRC and could comfortably leave with a tie and points in two straight road games and come back to Addis with alot of confidence after successfuly gaining points on the road. But now the media is heavily laying more pressure than ever on a young team to beat one of Africa's finest in Kinshasha. A difficult task indeed. All this wouldn't be an issue if Abate didn't decide not to name the most talented and smartest 20-man roster to Katatura to at least leave with points. Thanks for putting more pressure on a inexperienced team Seyoum to go against a team led by Lomano LuaLua who happens to be one of Africa's finest middlefielders. Experience may kill us in the next game unless Seyoum drops his personal vandettas against some of Ethiopia's best and name the correct 20 or 23-man roster to Kinshasha.
