FC United of Manchester!

FC United of Manchester is the new addition to the football family. It was formed on 5 July 2005 by disgruntled Manchester United supporters after the takeover by American billionaire Malcolm Glazer. The rebel fans moved quickly enough to establish a breakaway club in time for the 2005/2006 season with Karl Marginson as a manager.

Obviously the Glazer takeover was the final straw for many diehard manchester United fans. But Marginson says it's just the fans' frustration at excessive crowd control at Old Trafford: "A lot of people have been upset over the past few years with being told they can't sing, they've got to sit down, they can't stand up. Things that they've been used to over the years, going to the Stretford End, sitting and singing with their mates, hopefully we can give something back to them," he added.

FC United currently play their home games at Gigg Lane after Bury agreed to help them out. It was going to be Droylsden whose boss Dave Pace was close to finalising a deal but initial talks broke down.

The official attendance for the club's opening league match at Gigg Lane against Padiham was 2,498 higher than the gate of some in League Two! Unofficial reports put the gate for the Padiham game a lot higher.

What do the fans feel about Man United now? "It's just an empty shell. It's like supporting a giant corporation - you might as well be supporting Tesco or Asda," said one. "I've been going to Old Trafford since I was seven. I'm now 53 and for the first time in my life I don't feel that I belong to the club," said another.

FC United's two seasons were successful. FC United entered at the tenth level of the English football league system (the second division of the North West Counties Football League) and they were confirmed as champions on 15 April 2006 and followed that up by being crowned as champions of Division 1 on 18 April 2007 and will play in the Northern Premier League Division One North for the 2007-08 season.

FC United play in the inaugural year of the Northern Premier League Division One North, losing their first two games against Lancaster City F.C. 1-2 and against Garforth Town on August 22 0-1 before moving into a mid table position with wins over Bridlington Town and Rossendale United. As a result of the eligibility rules for the FA Cup, they made their debut in this competition in the 2007-08 season and played away to Trafford F.C. in the Preliminary Round on September 2, winning the fixture 5-2. They have drawn Fleetwood Town F.C. in the following FA Cup qualifying round. Who knows with good fortune they might face manchester united-their reason of existence!
